Results of a program to study the solvent extraction properties of trifluoroacetylacetone and hexafluoroacetylacetone are described. Log distribution-pH curves are presented for the extraction of ironIII, copper, beryllium, zinc, and cobalt with benzene-hexafluoroacetylacetone and with chloroform-hexafluoroacetylacetone for the extraction of beryllium with benzene, chloroform, and toluene containing trifluoroacetylacetone for the extraction of copper, cobalt, and beryllium with butanol-trifluoroacetylacetone and for the extraction of chromiumIII with toluene-trifluoroacetylacetone. A survey of various solvent systems for the extraction of calcium with trifluoroacetylacetone and hexafluoroacetylacetone is also presented. For most systems, equilibration time studies and anion interference studies are described to aid in the establishment of analytically useful procedures. Acute toxicity studies on trifluoroacetylacetone and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione are described and permit the assignment of the rating toxic to trifluoroacetylacetone and not toxic to the other beta-diketone.
