Abstract:

The report discusses the eye safety problem created by projected field operations with a pulsed ruby laser. Information is presented to 1 support the establishment of 2 x 10 to the minus 9th power joules as a conservative value for the amount of laser energy tolerable at the eye pupil, 2 relate this threshold value to the laser beam characteristics and atmospheric effects involved in the USL experiments, and 3 describe the particular range geometry. Finally, procedures to ensure safe field operation are recommended. Author
