Abstract:
In order to investigate the applicability and extension of gasdynamic methods for MHD flow, the generalisation of the Crocco theorem for plasmas and the conditions for potential flow in a plasma with infinite electrical conductivity were derived. Next two-dimensional steady and one-dimensional unsteady potential flows were investigated by the graphical characteristics and by variational methods. Then two-dimensional steady and one-dimensional unsteady problems for a plasma with finite electrical conductivity were solved and the new methods were applied to a travelling wave plasma accelerator, to crossed-field accelerators and to magnetic nozzles. It was shown that the new methods can be applied also to Hall propulsion devices to MHD generators and to viscid plasma flows with non-vanishing heat conductivity and with varying electric conductivity.
