Abstract:

The design of a good display is inseparable from the use to which it will be put. While it is desirable in a single presentation to maximize all possible functions, it is unlikely that a display can at once be best for quick perception and high accuracy best for monitoring and tracking best for precision measurement and tactical evaluation. It is difficult to apply the criterion of use to the problem of display design because a thorough-going job analysis of the role of displays in information systems has not yet been made.
