One of the primary objectives was to determine the steady force characteristics at various cavitation numbers for ventilated foils of finite span fitted with trailing edge flaps. The tests were conducted in a towing facility so that the effect of the free surface on the forces could also be investigated. This information was used to assess the validity of theory modified to include effects of finite span, as well as in the later calculation of the oscillatory forces on a restrained, ventilated foil moving through a regular wave train.
