The report presents an analysis of the dynamics of supercritical shafts on many flexible supports in terms of a so-called transmission line analogy. The primary objective of the study is to develop a direct analytical approach for optimizing the support conditions, in terms of minimum flexural vibration behavior, for supercritical shafts flexibly supported on mass-spring- damper units at different locations along the shaft. The approach is based on the traveling wave concept as used in electrical transmission line theory. The governing differential equation used in this analogy includes terms which account for the effects of rotating inertia, gyroscopic motion, and shear deformations.
