Abstract:

Radiation emerging from the top and bottom of a plane-parallel planetary atmosphere is characterized by the intensity and polarization parameters. These parameters can be easily calculated once Chandrasekhars X- and Y-functions and the related Kand L-functions have been correctly evaluated. Numerical values of these functions are presented for the case of Rayleigh scattering. The functions are tabulated for a wide range of values of optical thickness, tau, of the atmosphere 0.15 or tau or 100 and a complete range of directional parameters. The ordinary moments, from order zero through four, of all the functions are also tabulated. Suggestions for additional uses of the tables are made. Author
