An experimental study of weak hydraulic jumps into shallow water was undertaken in order to better understand the effects of dispersion and surface wave turbulence on jump structure. Froude Numbers ahead ranged from 1.0 to 2.5, and heights ahead ranged from 0.15 cm to 8 cm. Results are 1 The transition Froude Number between purely laminar hydraulic jumps and those containing some surface turbulence increases with decreasing depth. 2 Surface turbulence is effective in reducing the amplitude of wave trains behind hydraulic jumps into fairly shallow water to very small values at Froude Numbers not much larger than the transition Froude Number. 3 The nondimensional jump front thickness at given Froude Numbers between 1.35 and 1.75 increases with decreasing depth.
