Abstract:
The effect of pre-straining an austenitic stainless steel to produce a structural transformation from austenite to martensite with resulting increase of tensile strength has been known for some time. In the investigation reported here the effect of pre-straining stainless steel En58b at room temperature and at the temperature of liquid nitrogen -196C on the tensile properties at room temperature and -196C has been studied to determine whether because of the increase of tensile strength it is possible to apply the technique of stretch forming to rocket motor structures.
