Abstract:

The applicability of underwater optical range gating, designed to extend the maximum range of underwater photography, was demonstrated in a series of experiments. With black tape on Scotchlite as the target. comparison photographs of gated and non-gated exposures showed promise in the clarity of the gated pictures, an improvement attributable to the elimination of most of the backscattered light. The apparatus is described and a sample of the data obtained at various target distances is presented and discussed. An expression for the energy density available at the receiver using the gating technique and a correlation of this expression with the experimental data are also presented. Author
