Abstract:
Both synthetic and natural synthetic polymers, for example stereo-regular polypropylene and cellulose, contain many asymmetric centers whose configurational relationships are fixed rather than random. The work summarized in this paper, models for 1,3- and 1,5-asymmetric induction were developed. These models, based on simple reactions, demonstrate the general validity of a rational steric approach to the mechanism of ordered elaboration of asymmetric centers in synthetic and natural polymers.
