Abstract:

Various Delta Configuration, including oscillating search units, were used to evaluate butt welds containing natural defects. A Schlieren optical system was used to photograph the characteristic sound beam patterns associated with the operations of the Delta technique. The Delta Technique is a multi-search unit method of ultrasonic weld inspection. Incident energy is angled into the weld region from two transmitters positioned transverse to the weld length, one on each side of the weld. Flaw information is received with a third search unit positioned directly over the weld. Flaw information is not dependent on preferred flaw orientation, although the receiver must be directly over the defect. Author
