Abstract:

The oxygen consumption and evaporative water loss rates of unrestrained cats were measured at ambient temperatures of 23 to 24C before and after ablation of the medial preoptic region. Postoperative rates were measured after postoperative weight loss had been regained by the hypothermic cats. The mean change of oxygen consumption per kilogram -17.3 was significant at the 2 level. The coefficient of correlation between decrease in metabolic rate and final colonic temperature reached was 0.94 p0.02. Evaporative water loss rate was not changed significantly p0.4. The decrease in metabolic rate is explained as due to ablation of hypothermia detectors in the median preoptic region which normally drive metabolism to prevent hypothermia at comfortable ambient temperature.
