The motion of a kink on a dislocation line is reduced to the dissociation of an electron from an adjacent atomic site and its transfer to the kink which thereupon moves. An explicit expression for the kink velocity is derived by means of tunneling. This relates it to the average energy gap, the atomic volume, and the applied stress in good accord with observations.
