Abstract:

Coupled magneto-ionic equations in total fields, for arbitrary primary wave incidence, and arbitrarily varying medium parameters, are solved in terms of first order mode amplitude equations, expressed in terms of so called inhomogeneous or homogeneous wave numbers. For media with symmetric wave propagation properties, the first order mode amplitude equations can also be replaced by gradient coupled, second order wave equations in so called characteristic components. The gradient coupling terms can then be separated in vertical incidence, and oblique incidence components. Expressions are derived for the mode transfer reflection coefficients, and mode transmission coefficients for an arbitrary, stratified magneto-ionic medium.
