Abstract:

In order to investigate the feasibility of developing a cost effectiveness formula for manmachine function allocation, a preliminary cost effectiveness formula was constructed and evaluated. Measures of cost and effectiveness, sources of data, and availability of data were investigated. Using the preliminary formula and methodology as a basis for the analysis, it was concluded that adequate measures of cost are available but that adequate measures of variable effectiveness have not yet been developed. Due to the complexity of the costeffectiveness formula and methodology and to the lack of accessibility of input data, a large amount of time and money will be required to perform function allocation analyses. It was determined that the derivation of a costeffectiveness formula for manmachine function allocation is feasible. At this time costeffectiveness analysis seems applicable to most cases of function allocation and appears to offer a reliable method for the allocation of functions between men and machines.
