The report is a preliminary study of attitude control in a high altitude satellite in which the gravity gradient stabilization rod is gimballed to produce reaction torques and to augment the gravity gradient restoring torques. The single axis perturbation equation describing the small angle motion of such a configuration is presented. An analytical solution of the steady-state frequency response of the system is carried out and as a result, active system requirements for reducing attitude errors are proposed based on the system response to periodic disturbances.
