On the B scope of the VF indicator, it is possible to determine the range of ship targets by tracking either on the center or the leading edge of the pip. An investigation was made of differences in operator performance in ranging by the two methods. The center of pip method gave slightly greater agreement between generator input and VF indicator output. In the first experiment, the mean difference between leading edge ranging and generator input was -77 yards for center of pip ranging, the mean difference was -61 yards. The respective discrepancies in the second experiment were -9 yards and -1 yard. The difference in ranging between the two methods was due to the fact that the use of the leading edge method resulted in larger and more frequent range underestimations than with the center of pip technique.
