The relationship between the moisture content of adsorbent-type charcoals and their residual adsorptive capacity for organic compounds was studied. Investigation of fourteen charcoal samples from submarine main-carbon filters has shown that the moisture content of the charcoals correlates with the organic loading previously determined by a steam desorption method. A simple apparatus for determining the moisture content of a charcoal sample was devised. The on-site determination of the residual adsorptive capacity of main-filter charcoals is suggested by the low cost of the closed-loop apparatus and the simplicity of the method. Since seventy percent of the charcoal samples which were investigated had more than half of their adsorptive capacity remaining, substantial savings should result.
