The Rydberg potential function was used to calculate the second and third order elastic constants for Cu, Ag, Al and Ni. The pressure dependence of the usual elastic moduli were evaluated in terms of these and compared with experimental data wherever possible. The results indicate that the dominant contribution to the third order constants is due to closed shell repulsion between ionic cores. Because of the central character of closed shell repulsion, it is thought that the Cauchy relations are approximately valid for metals at high pressures. Author
