Abstract:
The Rayleigh problem for a compressible radiating gray gas is analyzed by asymptotic methods and solved numerically for one limiting case. The problem is formulated for large ratio of the photon to molecular mean free path N, large Mach number M, and general values of the Boltzmann number Bo. Using Kruskals Principle of Maximal Complication, a detailed formal asymptotic analysis is carried out for various combinations of N, M, and Bo. Attention is focused on those limiting cases in which the asymptotic scaling of main interest yields an optically thin hot boundary layer with emission but no absorption, which may be solved independently of the corresponding outer flow. One representative case of such boundary-layer flow is solved numerically. Author
