Experimental work on the decomposition kinetics of C1O2 was completed. The stable intermediate responsible for the delayed chain-branching explosion was established as a previously unknown chlorine oxide, Cl2O3. This new compound was synthesized and characterized and its role in C1O2 explosions investigated. The explosive decomposition was studied from 65C to 134 C, and the effect of vessel size determined.
