The unique scanning and encoding technique resulting from this study was made possible by prior work done at The Te Company on a proprietary 4 mirror, coaxial configuration. The final instrument design does provide a means for automatically measuring the solar disk and eclipsed lunar diameters to a precision of 0.1 second of arc by the rotation of a small free running image rotator. Atmospheric errors have been eliminated or minimized by optimization of aperture, scan rate, and spectral band pass. Larger systematic errors, such as arising from diffraction effects have been accepted since they are known functions and can be extracted. Author
