Unsteady, incompressible, planar and axisymmetric, laminar free-mixing is investigated by a boundary layer type analysis with similarity methods. Four types of flows are considered namely, the asymptotic symmetric wake wherein the equations are linearized with respect to velocity perturbations, the symmetric wake wherein velocity differences can be large, the jet issuing into a quiescent ambient, and the asymmetric wake, i.e., the merging of two semi-infinite planar streams. Similarity solutions are shown to exist in all but one of the aforementioned flows the exception is the axisymmetric jet.
