Tests were conducted in a 23-foot-diameter, nuclear-blast-simulation device in order to calibrate the device and to determine the free-field response of soil specimens loaded dynamically. Two free-field sand specimens, each 10 feet deep, were tested at overpressures ranging from 39 to 450 psi. Twenty-nine tests were made on one specimen and five on the other. Soil tests, conducted both preshot and postshot to determine changes in the physical composition of the specimens, are described. Measurements of blast pressure, free-field pressure, free-field acceleration, and free-field arrival time were made. The results are tabulated. The regions within the specimen affected by the boundaries of the test chamber were approximately defined. Author
