Abstract:

A new method is presented for the design of columns and girders in unbraced multi-story steel frames which are subjected to combined horizontal wind loads and distributed gravity loads. The method is based on the concept of sway subassemblages and considers the elasticplastic behavior of girders, the instability of the beam-columns, and second order effects caused by P-delta moment on the structure. It employs a semi-graphical solution using specially prepared charts to develop the complete horizontal load-deflection relationship for each story designed.
