STRESSES IN AN ELASTIC-PLASTIC HALF-SPACE DUE TO A SUPERSEISMIC STEP LOAD

The plane strain problem of a step load moving with uniform superseismic velocity V c sub P on the surface of a half-space is considered for an elastic -plastic material obeying the von Mises yield condition. Using dimensional analysis the governing quasi-linear partial differential equations are converted into ordinary nonlinear differential which are solved numerically using a digital computer. To overcome computing difficulties asymptotic solutions are derived in the vicinity of a singular point of the differential equations. Numerical results are presented for a range of selected values of significant nondimensional parameters, i.e. of the surface load p sub ok, of Poissons ratio nu and of the velocity ratio Vc sub P.
