Abstract:

Experimental methods for determining the basic parameters characterizing radiation losses in a ruby laser in a resonator with plane mirrors are outlined, using theoretical concepts developed by the authors in earlier papers. The method is based on determination of the scattering coefficient by measurement of energy level populations during generation. The population of the metastable level, studied with the aid of log TTo cn2n T and To are transmittances with and without pumping, resp., indicates that saturation occurs somewhat later than the onset of generation and is independent of the pumping power. The variation in population is attributed to crystal inhomogeneity. Mathematical formulas are given for determining the loss relative to the population and to the transmittance efficiency of the noise radiated by the ruby surface. Author
