A femoral hip prosthesis with a silastic covering in the head area was evaluated to determine its ability to withstand repeated loads of the order of those encountered in a normal hip. The evaluation consisted primarily of a cyclic test in which the prosthesis was loaded to 600 pounds each cycle. The evaluation was terminated after 231,600 cycles. Approximately .001 inch of wear was observed at the end of the test. Author
