Nine surface colors which are identifiable on an absolute basis in daylight were viewed under red light. Observers received practice in identifying them by number. Three different neutral gray masks were used to preclude identification on the basis of contrast. It was found that no more than four of these surface colors could be used together for coding under red light when absolute identification is required. Three groupings of four colors each can be used. Author
