Abstract:

The electrostatic field of the atmosphere is normally enhanced in fog and cloud. This field, even when quite small, can effect the combination of colliding but otherwise noncoalescing droplets. Stronger fields produce forces of mutual attraction among the droplets. Preliminary results on the degree to which electrostatic forces act to modify the motion of cloud droplets are presented. Methods for the possible modification of the field are discussed.
