Direct spectroscopic observations of the hydrogen bond stretching frequencies in the pure cresols and chlorophenols were obtained in the far infrared. Previous difficulties in making assignments were obviated by the use of the following criteria, which provide unambiguous identification of the stretching frequency 1 disappearance of the absorption when -OCH3 is substituted for -0H 2 absence of the band in the Raman spectrum 3 observation of a broad asymmetric band contour. Although no generalizations may yet be drawn, there is no simple correlation between hydrogen bond streching frequency and near infrared bonded 0-H frequency shifts for these compounds. The stretching frequency of the intramolecular H-bond in o-chlorophenol is lower than those of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the other examples. Author
