Abstract:

The Bourdon-Wiersma Stipple Test was administered to 50 hospitalized Navy and Marine male enlisted personnel. The epileptic group consisted of 25 patients having a clinical diagnosis of convulsive disorder. The control group consisted of 25 orthopedic patients with no record of such disorder. The 2 groups were matched for age, education, and intelligence. There was no significant difference in performance between the two groups on any of the test variables. The inability of the stipple test to elicit a significant difference in performance between diagnosed epileptics and controls makes it questionable as a screening device to detect latent epilepsy as originally claimed.
