In conjunction with the development of an Antisubmarine Warfare Environmental Prediction Service ASWEPS, a series of manuals has been prepared describing the various phases of the program from the initial observation of the environment to the final application of an oceanographic forecast to Antisubmarine Warfare ASW operations. This manual describes procedures for manually predicting the thermal structure of the ocean with emphasis on forecasting for a small area over a limited time period. Although procedures described are generally applicable to any ocean, emphasis is on the prediction of the thermal structure in the western North Atlantic Ocean ASWEPS area. Forecasting procedures for a number of individual processes are described, and then the results are combined into a step-by-step procedure for computing changes to the thermal structure. All computational steps herein are presented by graphs and nomograms in order to reduce the time required to make a forecast. Examples are given of how to use the various graphs and tables required for an individual process, and sample forecasts are made combining all the procedures described. Where available, actual observations are used to verify the individual procedures. Author
