Studies of surface layers of aluminum hydroxide by means of light optical microscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermoanalysis are described and the results and their significance are discussed. Special attention is given to the effect of handling temperature on the formation of hydroxide layers and their properties.
