In this paper the influence of a small mountain on the airflow above is examined by means of a two-layer model. The one-dimensional solution for the steady state reveals that the degree of perturbation in the airflow in a mountainous region is determined by the upstream conditions as well as the height of the mountain. Provided that the height of the mountain reaches a critical value, a stationary pressure jump will occur on the lee side when the Froude number of the upwind side is less than 1. The occurrence of the pressure jump is then examined by means of a one-dimensional solution for the unsteady state. Author
