The energy requirement for dispatching an instrument package through ice by thermal heating was estimated, and the feasibility of such an undertaking was determined. Heat fluxes were supplied through the bottom surface of the package as well as through the circumferential surfaces. The ice in contact with the package melts after sufficient heating, and as a consequence the package moves downward. With given assumptions, the energy requirement was estimated first by expressing the rate of melting downward velocity of the package in terms of the heat supplied through the bottom surface. With this information, the heat loss through the cylindrical surface was calculated. The sum of these two energy terms gives the total heat required. Author
