Abstract:

To examine the structural adequacy and retraction capability of a hydrofoil assembly designed for inboard rotation, it is necessary to determine the external loading first. A simplified theory based on linearized rigid-body dynamics was developed to estimate the forces and hinge moment on a single port or starboard strut-foil-pod configuration undergoing retraction while the hull-borne boat is rolling in a beam sea. Utilizing available free -oscillation model test data of a representative hydrofoil craft, engineering upper bound estimates are carried out to demonstrate the theory for the extreme foils up and foils down conditions.
