Abstract:

The dependence of noise figure of traveling-wave tubes on magnetic fields is calculated in terms of a recently published method. This method shows that the relevant terms cancel out and that there is no first-order dependence. The negative result is explained as an inherent failure of this approach, which does not take into account two noncoherent noise sources. An alternate approach is suggested, using transformation properties of the electron beam capable of carrying four axially -symmetric waves. It is deduced that the transverse modes are cooled by high magnetic fields and that energy interchange between the purely longitudinal space-charge modes and the two purely transverse modes can occur. The detailed calculation of the energy interchange will be published in a forthcoming report. Author
