Abstract:
The results of an extensive experimental program to study the plastic response of thin-walled, unstiffened cylindrical shells to external blast loading are presented. Empirical relations between the shell and blast parameters that satisfy a failure criterion based on a given level of plastic deformation are given. A comparison of calculated and actual overpressure values for 159 shells that had responses satisfying the failure criterion permanent deformation in the radial direction - 5 percent to 10 percent of the original diameter is made. The average deviation between these values is 14 percent.
