The one-dimensional propagation of sound and the significance of the two sound speeds frozen and equilibrium is examined in detail for the case of a gas mixture at or near equilibrium, consisting of gases which obey the ideal gas law and Daltons law of partial pressures and which have all their degrees of freedom fully excited.
