The report is a theoretical analysis of the transient motion of a submerged container with a pneumatic depth-control system intended to provide preselected depth for a specified period of time. This analysis provides general solutions in terms of quadratures for the motion of the system, and a physical argument on the basis of energy describing the general behavior of the system. Because the initial design concept for the depth-control mechanism introduces a negative hysteresis loop in the restoring function due to control system delays, the undamped system is unstable. However, because of hydrodynamic damping, the system will actually go into a stable limit cycle after the initial transient. Author
