Measurement of the work function of iridium made by the variation of thallium ion current with temperature of the iridium ionizer resulted in a value of 5.53 plus or minus .03 eV, compared to 5.40 found for thermionic electron emission. A modification of a previous design for a quadrupole magnet with alnico drivers led to an increase of the field at the pole tips from 6.6 kG to 7.3 kG. This value is still less than the approximately 10 kG obtained by electrically driven quadrupole magnets of similar aperture. Author
