Abstract:

The principal objective of this research is to improve the accuracy of focal-depth determination as a means of distinguishing between natural earthquakes and explosions. The research has consisted mainly of evaluating a method of focal-depth determination which depends on recognition of the sequence of events which arise from the reflection of the initial P pulse at the surface, and evaluating the factors controlling the accuracy of this measurement. A second objective is to study the effect of the nature of a boundary on seismic pulses refracted along it both in scale models and in the real earth.
