Abstract:

The performance of a three stage axial flow compressor was computed to evaluate the compressor exit flow properties for various rotor tip speeds and inlet conditions. The compressor operates with supersonic relative velocities in all stages, and has blading with large turning angles. The analysis includes the effects of local heat transfer to the wetted surfaces. The analysis is performed using the results obtained from two dimensional cascade experiments for pressure recovery and local heat rates. The compressor is of the impulse type, therefore, relatively large increases in total pressure and total temperature are achieved in each stage. Real gas effects are included in the analysis by utilizing curve fits to the Mollier diagram for air in chemical and the thermodynamic equilibrium this is necessary for the pressure and temperature levels achieved in the compressor.
