Autoionization effects present in the ultraviolet absorption spectra of a number of atomic vapours e.g. of the alkaline earths Ca-Ba, the Group III A elements Al-Tl and those of Group IV B, Si-Pb, are described, and some of the detail is interpreted qualitatively in the framework of the theory of lineshapes Beutler-Fano profiles, recently put forward by Fano.
