Abstract:
Available literature on the effects of system nonlinearities on human operator tracking performance is summarized. The reviewed reports include experimental investigations in the technical areas of human engineering and aircraft handling qualities. Pertinent information is presented on experimental details, types of it is concluded that the general state of knowledge in this area is unsatisfactory. Several nonlinearities such as actuator rate limiting important in aircraft manual control systems have not been experimentally investigated, and there is inadequate data on the influence of forcing function characteristics.
