Abstract:
The weight average molecular weight found for polymethyl alpha cyanoacrylate was 17,600. But the number average molecular weight for the same material was ca 2000 by vapor pressure measurements. Therefore, the MwMn is 8.8, indicating a wide molecular weight distribution. The infrared spectra for the polymers of methyl alpha cyanoacrylate polymerized with different nucleophiles differ only in the following regions 1 OH absorption at 3300cm, 2 OCH3 absorption at 1100cm. The absorption peak at 1100cm occurs only in the case of the methanol initiated polymerization product, indicating that OCH3 anion is the main initiating species in this case. The OH absorption, large in the case of water, is relatively small in the case of the other anions. This indicates that pyridine, B-alanine, cysteine, and glycine initiated polymers had very few polymer chains with OH as a terminal group. Consequently the terminal group for each polymer was most likely the corresponding anion of the pyridine, B-alanine, cysteine, and glycine.
