Abstract:

The report presents the results of a survey, the object of which was a preliminary determination of the potential of mass production for lowering shelter costs. All cost items necessary to a comparison of mass production versus conventional techniques in building are identified. These cost items, for a conventionally built shelter, are arrayed for identification of those for which significant savings through mass production are possible. Selected items whose cost may be reduced through the use of massproduction techniques are reviewed and savings estimated. The direction of future research, to quantify the savings identified in the preliminary survey, is outlined.
