Abstract:
A ruby laser system has been assembled which includes provision for thermally tuning the laser operating wavelength. Experiments have been carried out which were designed to test the potential of such a radar for the remote determination of the vertical profile of water vapor by means of a spectral study of the back scattered energy. The results of the experiments indicate that such measurements are feasible. However, detailed information must be obtained on the water vapor absorption line structure. A theoretical study has been undertaken of the contribution of secondary molecular scattering to the return observed by a laser optical radar. The results are presented as a function of the beam width of the receiver optics and the wavelength of the laser. It is shown that the contribution of secondary scatter to the observed energy can be made negligibly small by suitably restricting the beam width of the receiver optics. Author
